The working time of an employee is one of the most important issues that the Labor Code regulates. What is working time and what is working hours? How many working days are there in a year?

What is working time dimension?

Working time is the time, specified in hours, during which an employee is at the disposal of the employer in the company or at another place designated by the employer. Most often, it is 8 hours per day for 5 working days per week, making a total of 40 hours per week. Working time, on the other hand, is these 40 hours per week multiplied by the number of weeks in a given pay period, which is usually a month. The working hours in each month may be different if a public holiday falls on working days in a given pay period. How many hours of work in a month are considered full time?

How many hours are considered full time?

The aforementioned 40 hours of work per week is referred to as full-time. According to the Labor Code, the time dimension should not exceed 8 hours per day. Often, however, our employment is on a part-time basis, which means that you can work ½, ¼ or ¾ full-time. What does this mean in practice? The working time of such employeesóas well as leave is calculated proportionally to full-time. This will not be a fixed number, as the number of working days will vary depending on the number of days throughout the month, or public holidays.

What types of full-timeósós do we break out?"

We know how many hours a full-time position has, but there is also part-time. This is a concept thatóre derived from how many days a full-time position has. Since it is already known that a full-time position is 40 hours per week, other types of full-timeós are calculated proportionally.

1/2 FTE how many hours is that?

This will mean that ½ FTE is 20 hours of work per week.

1/4 time how many hours is that?

In the case of employment on ¼ full-time, the hours to be worked by the employee in a week is 10.

3/4-time how many hours is that?

Employment on ¾ full-time means 30 hours of work per week. Does this mean that employees hired at such a rate realize their working hours every working day only in a proportionally smaller amount?

That's what it means.

This all depends on the employment contract and the employer's flexibility. A full-time employee therefore does not have to work 4 hours every day, only other options are possible, such as working 3 days a week for more hours per day. However, the number of hours per day still cannot exceed 8 per day and 40 per week. Thus, an employee can work some days as if he were a full-time employee, and have the following days off. It all depends on the contract he enters into with his employer.

How to calculate working hours?

The working time dimension in each month may be different, so it is important to be able to calculate it. For example, in January 2022, two public holidays fell – January 1 and January 6. To calculate the working hours for this month, make the calculation:

(40×4) + (1×8) – (2×8) = 160+8+16 = 152

This means in translation that we multiply 40 hours of weekly work by 4, which is the number of weeks in this pay period. Further to the result we add the product of 8 hours and the number of days remaining to be worked in a given month (in the case of this month it will be 1 day). In the case of public holidays (except Sundays), 8 hours are subtracted from the resulting working time (in this case multiplied by 2 due to the two public holidays).
